What They Throw
The following is a quick and easy breakdown of what pitches are thrown by each pitcher.
A small sampling of pitches (usually 2-3 innings) are measured using radar and assessed for movement or type of pitch.
Because of the small sampling and visual observation, these breakdowns may not be completely accurate
Many pitcher/catcher combinations call more than three pitches. For example, the USA Elite catcher calls five different pitches for each of her two pitchers. For simplicity, I will group all pitches into three classifications:
1.
Fastballs, including fast drops and screwballs
2. Spinners, including curves, rise/curve combinations and off speed drops.
3. Change-ups that are significantly slower. |
Jennie Ritter, USA Elite
Jennie possesses one of best rise balls in the tournament. She uses it frequently, throwing it on all counts.

Dana Sorensen, USA Elite
(no picture available)
Extremely consistent. All pitches registered well into the 60's. Also throws a "screw" which breaks into a right handed batter.
All USA pitchers seem to be characterized by the "slap" of their glove against their thigh on release.

Li Qi, China
Characterized by a loud "Aha" on the release, Li is one of the fireballers for China.
She has obviously worked on her breathing techniques and it seems to work for her.

Kirsten Scheele, Netherlands
Kirsten has good arm strength and uses a variety of pitches, but might consider making some modifications in her delivery to become more consistent.

Cougar's Pitcher
(Sorry, but didn't record the name before I left the ballpark.)
A very smooth and consistent delivery, she throws most of her pitches in the low 60's.
Her fastball appears to have a natural curve, which breaks away from a right handed batter.

Zhand Yan Qinj, China-Bejing
Zhand saves her heat for special occaisions and primarily uses a rising spinner while mixing in change-ups as well.
Team Canada hit a few long balls off of her but her mechanics are near perfect and she could have success later in the tournament.

Kaila Holtz, Canada
Kaila hides her pitches well, especially from inquisitive reporters!
She seems to favour a slightly off speed spinner which averages 58mph and saves her heat for special occaisions.
