The Difference The Count MakesOct 15, 2002Another cornerstone in the ultimate pitching strategy is the importance of the count.
It's no secret that the count matters but when you see how much difference it makes and then combine it with the other factors already talked about - then you can start zoning in on getting that first strike.
The following info is from www.edgedec.com. They seem to the leading experts on this and related subjects, although their research is done using college baseball players.
This week's secret:
Get ahead and stay ahead!
If you can get the first one over and then hit 50% of your pitches - you'll always be on the right side of the above chart.
Now, what's the trick to getting ahead? If the previous theorems are true then it would make sense to start inside. The oval shaped grey area is the area you should be able to hit at least 50% of the time, right?
So have your catcher set up inside and get that first strike!
Don't worry about the hitters catching on to this - we'll discuss "decoys" later.
