Batter's TendancyOct 7, 2002Batter's have lots of tendancies but they have one foible that is so significant that you can use it as one of the cornerstones of your strategy.
They like to swing the bat.
Boy, do they ever. Next time you find yourself as a spectator, just count the number of pitches that batters swing at that would have been called a "ball".
Compare that to the number of called strikes.
I'll bet you the ratio will be more than double. It might even be as high as 5:1 !!!
If this premise is true then by definition it must be true that the strike zone is larger than we thought it was.
So........
This week's secret:
Move your catcher farther "out"
(Or "in", if you're throwing inside).
Ask your catcher to set the target farther away from the centre of the zone than he or she is at present.
It's nearly impossible to go too far with this. You'll surprise yourself. You'll get batters swinging at pitches that are well out of the zone.
And umpire's will help out too with some called strikes, especially low and away.
