Mechanics

Dec 2, 2002

One of these days I'm going to really get into this subject using photo's and diagrams but for now all I'm going to deal with is the single most important part of mechanics - the revolution of the arm.

Last Saturday I was able to throw for a couple hours by myself at work. How's that for a secret?

It was a great opportunity for me to think through this subject of mechanics before we get back to strategy.

Man, are there ever a lot of throwers out there who are doing it wrong! Especially the young throwers and especially girls - but there's men too.

The problem is the extension of the arm.

Don't make the revolution look like a bicycle wheel.

Do make it look like an e.

The key is in the angle of the right elbow. It should begin flexed and gradually straighten until the release.

This means that the ball should start near the chin and follow the face up just missing the cap and ear before it starts to extend.

This week's secret:

"Start small and finish big."

Next week's topic:

"Umpires"
