Jr "B" Provincials

Slugfest

nearly 4 hours long!

Jesse Wadell's (left) 4th hit of the game in the 8th inning helped extend the game and Sooke's ultimate comeback in the provincial Jr "B" final.

Local fans (and Masters waiting to play their final game) watched in amazement as hitters continually responded to challenges and fought back from deficits.

A particularly unusual play in the top of the 8th inning ultimately cost the Mariners the gold medal.

Lee Lucas had belted a 2 run homer that would have put the Richmond club up by 3 runs but the ensuing ceremony at home plate resulted in Lucas failing to touch home plate.

An alert Sooke player spotted the faux paux and stepped on the plate with ball in hand. Lucas was called out and the Mariners had to settle for a two run lead heading into the bottom of the 8th.

Sooke answered with a two run homer off the bat of Ryan Cumberland and the game was headed into the 9th inning.

Pitcher Sean Koster re-entered the game in the top of the 9th and retired the side in order setting the stage for a Sooke win in the bottom of the 9th against a tiring Tyson Barkman, who had pitched the entire game.

Ultimately it was a passed ball that finally brought the game to a close after nearly four hours. Final score 18-17.
