Wizards Find A Way
locals win it again
Calem Gardner (left) lead a potent offense that battled back from deficits on several occaisions as the Wizards claimed their 2nd consecutive tourney championship.
With ace pitcher Travis Moyle not able to pitch against any of the "D" teams, the Wizards needed runs and plenty of them.
The locals dropped only one game, that to the Regal Beagle Rangers by a score of 8-7, and only managed to outscore opponents by a total of 4 runs in the 4 round robin games.
The semi-final matchup against the Dukes from Central Park was one of the highlight games as Wizard pitcher Barrie Woodard surrendered 10 runs in the first 3 innings but the Squamish bats answered back and ended the game in 4 innings with a final score of 17-10 in 4 innings.
The final game against Clearbrook Plaza featured a classic matchup between Vaughn Mendel and Travis Moyle.
Clearbrook struck first with 2 runs in the top of the first inning, but the Wizards answered back with 1 run in the bottom of the inning, when Woodard drove in Gardner, who had doubled.
Moyle then settled in to his rythym, holding the Valley boys scoreless through 5 innings and his mates rallied to score 5 runs in the 4th to put the game on ice.
Clearbrook answered back with 2 in the top of the 7th to end the scoring at 8-4.
Moyle finished with 10 strikeouts while allowing 11 hits. Mendel struck out 8 Wizards and allowed 12 hits.
