A Giant Undertaking

Underwood pitches three games

After a dissapointing season last year, the Giants added a little more hitting and pitching depth from the Connaught park Hawks and it paid off.

Ivan Thomas belted a home run and a triple to lead the Giant attack in the final game and Matt Underwood picked up the 6-5 win over Derek Mayson and the Lomas. It was Underwood's third win of the tourney as his teammates scored 23 runs over the three games in capturing their first Premier league title.

"Pretty much everyone hit the ball" said Trevor Johnstone, "and we found a way to win all three games, but they were all very close."

The Lomas took 2nd place after dropping both their Saturday games, first to the Firefighters (2-1) and then to the Giants (10-7). They bounced back on Sunday winning 4-0 over the Firefighters behind Derek Mayson's pitching.

The Firefighters had to settle for third spot despite being in every game and battling down to the wire.

The tourney was reduced to three teams after the Stealers, Van City, and Wizards all dropped out due to a lack of players.

At the beginning of the season it was agreed that the playoffs should be wrapped up earlier as player interest begins to wane in late July and August. One possible reason for this is that there is not enough motivation to continue playing once the provincial tournaments are over.

Another suggestion is to move the entire season later in the year to allow players more time for coaching their sons and daughters in the month of May, while still allowing two weeks in the end of August for family vacation.

TIC would like to know what you think the main reason is for the lack of commitment from players and how this could be changed.
