Steal of the Year?
Premier league tightens up
Stealer GM Marshall Shields wasted no time moving in on the prize package, made available following the demise of the Van City ball club.
Van City coach and team sponsor Roy Cope had barely announced the team's plans to dismantle, when Shields was already gleeming about the Stealer's new signing of pitcher/3rd baseman Dean Webster (left).
"This fills a big void for us" said Shields, "he (Webster) is a great hitter and he can pitch too, so we're feeling pretty good."
But have the Stealers improved enough to keep pace with the defending champion Giants, who have added Team Canada pitcher Nick Underhill?
Shields is confident...
"Our lineup will be pretty tough...Newitt, Abrey, McGrath, Strang...there aren't too many easy outs there and Dean will only bring everyone's level up another notch!"
The Stealers have also added Brandon Thistle, but the Meralomas have made the most pre season noise by adding key players from the defunct Squamish Wizards: Calem Gardner, Kevin Smillie, and Craig Halliday - as well as speedster Matt Dobie from the Connaught Park Raindogs.
Meanwhile, the Firefighters await the inevitable inheritance of the youngsters who Cope has been developing over the years including Byron Colibaba, Mike Tyake, Tanner Wellington, Brett Fraser, and others who could possible outblast the acquisitions made by other teams.
