Mariners Sail Thru Playoffs

"Soupy" wins three

After falling behind in each of their four games, the Mariners capitalized on timely hitting to score in the late innings and win the South Fraser playoff tournament in convincing fashion, winning all four games.

The final game against Surrey Sar Majors went into extra innings and the Surrey club appeared to have the momentum as pitcher Kurt Penner, who had relieved Andy Adamson, was cruising through the Mariner lineup effortlessly.

In the top of the 8th inning, with the international rule in effect, the Mariner coaches decided to hit away rather than bunt the runner over and it paid off as Jeremy Wowk and Scott Deleeuw hit back to back doubles setting the pace for a 7 run outburst.

Sars responded with 1 run in the bottom of the inning to end the game 13-7 in favour of the Mariners.

Ryan Campbell picked up the complete game victory, his 3rd of the tournament. "He really came into his own this weekend" said head coach Milt Michael. "Soupy's going to be a good one now that he has a changeup to go with his rise ball - and he's only 18 years old!"

Bryan Abrey was outstanding for the Mariners, belting 3 home runs and turning in some sparkling plays at shortstop. Georgio Trazolini and Mike Vanderwel also hit timely homers and were tough outs all weekend.

The Surrey Rebels settled for third place after dropping the semi final to Sars by default when the Surrey club protested their use of illegal players. Tournament directors ruled that a team cannot use players from another team in the same league.
