Stand Up!
Canada shows no mercy
Had it been an international men's game, it would have certainly resulted in a bench clearing brawl or the next batter getting plunked - but in this Canada Cup women's event it only drew polite applause from the thousands who surrounded the park.
It happened in the second inning with Canada leading the Gold Coast Hurricanes 8-0 and well on their way to an easy 10-0 mercy win in just 3 innings.
Team Canada had a runner on first base with two out when the next batter hit a shallow single to center field.
On seeing the center fielder bobble the ball, the baserunner aggresively broke for third and slid in safe.
The batter, who was then rounding first, did the unthinkable (at least in the men's game) and raced towards second.
That runner was thrown out to end the inning but that brings to mind the difference between the men's and women's game.
There's an unwritten rule in the men's game that you don't run the bases aggressively when you've got the game well in hand. Heck, some batters have been beaned because their teammate dared to bunt when they held a healthy lead.
Women apparently don't heed the same code or at least approach the game from a different perspective.
