Young and Old Help Sox Even Series
Game 3 and 4 on Sunday
Gerry Kennedy belted a grand slam home run against Mike Piechnik in the first game and Brian Abrey went 3 for 3, including an inside the park home run in the second game to lead the Vancouver Grey Sox to a pair of victories and even up the series at 2 apiece.
Rumours of Kennedy's retirement were obviously greatly exagerated as the veteran proved he can still get the job done both on offense and defense. The "bigman" was a tough out all weekend and also fielded several short bunts from his position at 3rd base.
Game one saw Rick Smith strike out 14 Portland batters while allowing only 1 hit as the Sox coasted to a 7-0 mercy win. Mike Piechnik took the loss with Norm Linton relieving.
Kennedy's blast finally cured the hex as the Sox had never beaten Piechnik until Sunday's game.
Game two set the stage for Abrey's heroics as the youngster hit the ball hard on every at bat and the Sox rallied to score 7 runs.
Nick Underhill took the win while Norm Linton suffered the loss.
Portland's Evan Potskin went 2 for 3 at the dish including a towering home run to make the game close - however Underhill had the final say as he struck out Potskin to end the game in the top of the 7th.
The weekend leaves the Grey Sox with a 16-2 record for the season, ranked #2 in Canada, and #6 in ISC.
