Gorilla in the Midst of Controversy
is goop finally gone?
Officially Softball Canada's rule states that "no foreign substance" shall be allowed on the ball.
Unofficially, many umpires look the other way, especially when the substance is the new clear Gorilla Gold grip enhancer, which leaves no visible trace on the ball.
At the ISC World tournament last year, Colin McKenzie (left) made a move to his rear pocket, which contained a Gorilla Gold rag, a part of his routine. "It's mostly a mental thing" said McKenzie, "I like to feel that tackiness".
The controversy is a long way from over though.
"I would toss every ball with the crap on it out of game. However, we do not do it because of the screams of protest from the elite "A" teams. Remember there is always a different set of rules for Sr. A. In fact they think there are no rules." says umpire Bill Watson.
Umpire Bob Henning has a different interpretation on what he calls "officiating not umpiring".
The ISC along with the NCAA has officially allowed the use of Gorilla Gold only as a grip enhancer.
